Omaha Area Youth Orchestra's Annual Side by Side Concert
Sunday, May 4, 2014 | 7:00 PM
Holland Center | Kiewit Concert Hall
The 15th annual Side-by-Side Concert will feature the organization’s top-level orchestra, the Youth Symphony, performing alongside musicians and conductors from the Omaha Symphony Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Segall and Omaha Symphony Music Director Thomas Wilkins. Repertoire will include the Overture to “Der Freischütz” by Carl Maria von Weber; “Hoe-Down” from “Rodeo” by Aaron Copland; “Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral” by Richard Wagner; and “Romeo and Juliet” by Tchaikovsky.
In addition, the concert will feature the premiere of a new piece called “Duality” by local composer Eric Richards commissioned by OAYO and the Metropolitan Youth Jazz Orchestra (MAYJO). This piece will be performed by members of the Youth Symphony and MAYJO.
A note of special pride for OAYO is the occasion to celebrate Aviva Segall’s 15th season as the Music Director and chief architect of our growing and thriving orchestral programs. Displays and activities in the lobby prior to the concert will feature OAYO’s history, a visual tribute to Ms. Segall and a historical view of OAYO since its creation by the members of the Symphony Guild and Omaha Public Schools in 1958.
This concert is made possible through generous support from the Pacific Life Foundation.
